So signing up to Carliann’s six-week introductory meditation course was in hope rather than an expectation that it would work. As you know I’ve suffered with my lumbar spine/lower back issues for a long time now. I’ve always done Yin yoga as it’s my favourite type of yoga but now after religiously attending your weekly class on a Tuesday night. I can honestly say that the difference in my lower back is truly amazing. This I put down to your wonderful classes. I can literally jump out of bed now were I seriously struggled before and can go straight into my routine without having to ‘wait’ until I could get moving.

I started to practise yoga back in 2014 after being diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in both hips.  Initially I joined a yoga studio, where I was able to experiment with a number of different styles, taught by a variety of teachers.  It was in July 2014 when I first went to one of Carli’s classes and I was hooked after the first one!  Yes, the slower pace of the class and spending more time in each posture helped me to manage the pain from my arthritis, but it was more than that.  Carli genuinely cared that I was working within different pain boundaries to her other students and gave me alternative postures, which ensured that I felt fulfilled after each class.  It has to be said that her voice is perfect for yin yoga – soft and meditative – and I have fallen asleep on more than one occasion towards the end of a class!! 


As the pain of my arthritis increased, I chose to practise at home, but following hip replacement surgery in March 2017, I was keen to start my practise again and for me, there was only one person I wanted to help me achieve that aim safely!  Carli has guided me through a series of one-to-one sessions, carefully designed to build strength, flexibility and confidence, so that I am now back at class, enjoying yin again and looking forward to progressing into a stronger style of yoga.  I will never be free of my condition and my body will continue to change as a result, so some positions will always be a challenge, but my experience of Carli has been one of patience and encouragement, teaching me to listen to my body and not to push myself beyond what she describes as ‘comfortable discomfort’.  I am grateful for the opportunity to practice yoga with Carli, as she has made a huge difference to my quality of life.

'My first attempt at yoga was a 'yin yoga' class with Carliann and despite my concerns on whether I would be 'any good' Carliann quickly made me feel at ease. I liked the yin class especially as it gave me permission not to compete or strive to be better than anyone else, just be in the moment and relax after a tough working week. I loved this approach and I immediately felt I was going to enjoy this class. After nearly a year of a regular yin class my lower back pain has virtually gone and although I am still a novice yogi it has given me confidence in other areas of my life. If you'd told me 18 months ago when I started my yoga journey, that I would love it so much, I would've thought you were crazy! My first class started to change my mind though! Sivananda with Carli was beautiful, strong but graceful, and I didn't feel out of my depth. For me, exercise has always been a challenge because I have Cerebral Palsy. I'm one of the lucky ones, and it's only mild in my case, but it does really restrict what I can do. All of my lower body is incredibly tight, I've had to have two operations to release both groin and achillies tendons, and even so, there isn't a lot of 'give' in them! To find something like yoga, that helps encourage that flexibility, as well as teachers like those at the studio, who are understanding and let me work to MY edge, while encouraging me to try for a little more is priceless.  While some things are always going to be a challenge (I'm thinking of forward folds and balancing postures :) ) it's great to know that I can improve the flexibilty I have, I've more strength too, and a lot more confidence in just being in my body. Looks like I'm hooked to yoga for life

I've been lucky to have Carli for a Teacher for the past 10 months. Carli teaches Sivananda with passion and her heart goes into every practice. She has taught me to listen to my body and not push myself but also to push myself just enough to progress. After a brain injury It was recommended I try yoga. Yin Yoga with Carli has been so important to my recovery.  During the practice I can leave the thoughts and worries of the day and transcend into peaceful mindfulness. Just to let you know how much I feel yoga has benefited myself! I've been doing CrossFit for around 2 years now but until the past year I was struggling with some olympic lifts due to my restrictions in mobility. It's no coincidence that my lifting has improved and the weights lifted have improved since I started your yoga classes. I could never sit comfortably in a squat especially with a huge weight on my shoulders but this all comes naturally, as it should, since starting your classes!

 

The benefits do not just come in hitting a few PB's at the gym (which is obviously a big bonus) but I've found the main benefit is from my mindfulness which makes everything I do day to day, from work to spending time with friends etc a lot more enjoyable!
